Pompei: A City Destructed by Vesuve

In the South West Italy, The region Compania starts from Sorrento to Salerno which you may recall as “La Perla” that means the pearls of Amalfi Coast.

The ancient city Pompeii is one of the main attractions to see during your visit in Amalfi. It is only 30 min from Naples with train, Circumvesuviana line. Pompeii, the ancient Roman city, has always been a popular destination before and after the destruction by Vesuve.

The city was founded around 6-7 BC and with 1. century became the main centre for traders and intellectuals of those days. The everyday life in this city seems much more free vs the other Roman cities. One of the main books that we can recommend is “Shadows in Bronze” by Lindsey Davis and the other one is “Pompeii" by Robert Harris. Both these novels help you visualising the daily life in Pompeii, the description of Roman engineering, water supply tecnology, the engineering that you wouldn’t expect in those days, tips about the architecture and learn how and why Pompeii is differentiated among all Roman cities. The main idea of both books are about the destruction of the very civilized city.

In Harris Robert’s novel “Pompeii”, one of the characters in the novel, named as Pliny was actually connected to the writer of “Naturalis Historio” Gaius Pliniys Secundus – who was investigating the natural and geographical phenomena in the wider region in those days. It is by his diaries and books that we learn some about Pompeii. 

Robert Harris'in "Pompei" romanındaki karakterlerden biri olan Pliny'nin gerçek hayatta "Naturalis Historio" nun yazarı Gaius Pliniys Secundus ile bağlantısı var. Secundus, Pompei şehri hakkındaki yazdığı kitapları ile bilgileri bugüne taşımıştır.

The most interesting thing is that although the people living in Pompeii had been through several earthquakes, still were not aware of the danger of volcanic activity that was awaiting for them.

You can also check "Historie de la vie" by Philippe Aries and Georges Duby. It is a very classical collection, the first book is on the Roman Empire period and include many images of Pompeii.

We do not recommend any location to stay around Pompeii, the best idea is to stay in Naples or in Sorrento. Naples will offer you most probably the best Neapolitan pizza since they are the founders .If you have some more time, you can visit the Naples Archeological Museum to see more on the Pompeii leftovers.
